How to Roast Chestnuts

http://www.rodale.com/how-roast-chestnuts?page=0%2C0&cm_mmc=DailyNewsNL-_-2010_12_15-_-Top5-_-NA

Pudge would be really agitated if he knew I was roasting chestnuts instead of giving them to him.

Eagle Rare Single Barrel

http://www.greatbourbon.com/eagleraresb.aspx

Speaking of expectations, how can any bourbon live up to this description?

Baltic Porter

http://milwaukeebrewing.com/documents/24-baltic-porter

Disappointing because of my high expectations.

This is a good beer that I could drink every day but it is not the extra special Porter that I was hoping for.

I wanted more rich toasty malt, vanilla, and oak.

Vitamin D

http://www.rodale.com/food-sources-vitamin-d?page=0%2C0&cm_mmc=DailyNewsNL-_-2010_12_07-_-Top5-_-NA

I already love cod, but maybe I need to eat more sardines.

Meatballs

http://simplyrecipes.com/recipes/swedish_meatballs/

Maybe I can make this recipe with ground turkey.

Brandy

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/11/30/AR2010113005452.html?sid=ST2010113005462

It all sounds very interesting but the local selection of brandies tends to be poor.

Vitamin D

http://www.rodale.com/vitamin-d-guidelines?cm_mmc=DailyNewsNL-_-2010_12_01-_-Top5-_-NA

Yet another very complicated subject.

Holiday drink recipes

Thanks to Elizabeth for calling my attention to this link.

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2010/12/01/dining/20101201-parties.html?emc=eta1

The Black Velvet (Guinness and Champagne) looks interesting.

I love horehound candies, but never thought of putting them into drinks before I saw the Rock and Rye Toddy.

Respect Beer

There is no excuse for disrespecting beer.

Spiced Cranberry Chutney

http://www.spoon.com/classics/preserves-marmalades/spiced-cranberry-chutney.html

I love chutney and I love Spoon Food so this has to be a winner.

Craft Beer on TV

http://dsc.discovery.com/tv/brew-masters/

Schedule conflict with Sunday Night Football on NBC.

Tough choice for us people who cannot figure out DVRs and stuff like that.

Winter Squash

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/18/garden/18garden.html?pagewanted=1&hpw

I have eaten a ton of winter squashes in my life and I am completely unfamiliar with this off-taste they are talking about.

I particularly liked the part about the guy who grew up without pumpkins and carved turnips for Halloween.

Venetucci Pumpkin Ale

http://www.bristolbrewing.com/our_beers.asp?brs_id=42

Good as a novelty beer but would not be my every day beer.

Distinct taste of pumpkin.

Bitter Alchemy

http://palatepress.com/2009/10/deirdre-heekins-bitter-alchemy/

Libation: A Bitter Alchemy (2009) by Deirdre Heekin

Sounds like an interesting book.

Unfortunately, not available in the MCFLS.

Bitter Aperitivi

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/11/16/AR2010111604696.html

Campari
Gran Classico Bitter
Luxardo Bitter

I have not tried any of these yet.

Fats in Food

http://www.consumerreports.org/health/conditions-and-treatments/high-cholesterol/what-is-it/fats-in-food.htm?EXTKEY=NE0BN00H

I need to eat more walnuts and anchovies.

Another egg recall

http://www.rodale.com/ohio-fresh-egg-recall?cm_mmc=DailyNewsNL-_-2010_11_09-_-Top5-_-NA

It never ends.

Arkansas Black apple

http://www.orangepippin.com/apples/arkansas-black

I bought a few at the Indoor Winter Farmers Market on Saturday.

Crisp and tart, one of my favorites.

The review at the above link is interesting because it implies that the apple mellows significantly with age.

Peach Street Distillers

http://www.peachstreetdistillers.com/

Artisanal distillery in Colorado.

Peach Street Distillers were featured in the book Chasing the White Dog (2010) by Max Watman.

Home Distiller

http://homedistiller.org/

Very interesting but illegal in the USA.

Fun to read about it though.

Laird's Applejack

http://www.spiritsreview.com/reviews-brandy-lairds-applejack.htm

As the reviewer notes, applejack is no longer made the old-fashioned freezing way.

There is a good reason for that.

Distillation allows removal of undesirable components that would leave a headache in every bottle.

Death's Door

http://deathsdoorspirits.com/

Wisconsin distillery.

Pickle Back

http://www.liquorsnob.com/archives/2010/02/pickle_back_shot_jamesons_and_pickle_juice.php

I had a Pickle Back at the Woodberry Kitchen in Hampden (a neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland).

http://www.woodberrykitchen.com/

Unlike the one at Liquor Snob, the one at Woodberry Kitchen was a shot of 101 bourbon, followed by a shot of homemade pickle juice, and a seasonal craft beer chaser. All three were excellent.

Baying Hound Aleworks

http://www.baying-hound.com/brew/

A nanobrewery in Rockville, Maryland.

Beware exploding bottles of ale.

Clipper City Brewing Co.

http://www.hsbeer.com/

We attended the brewery tour on Saturday afternoon.

Very interesting and educational.

And some good samples of craft beer.

Root Beer Taste Test

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/10/26/AR2010102603954.html

If Saranac is better than Sprecher, then it is very good.

The Kraken

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/all-we-can-eat/spirits/spirits-spiced-rum-beyond-the.html

I had a shot of The Kraken at the magic show in Baltimore last Friday night.

Good for an exotic change.

Four Loko

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/27/us/27drink.html?th&emc=th

A boozy caffeinated drink that tastes like watermelon?

I might have to try one.

Pumpkin Beers

http://www.chicagotribune.com/features/food/newsletter/sns-newsletter-pumpkin-beers,0,307622.story??track=ct-fooddrink-102110

Some interesting beers but I prefer more traditional brews without the extra flavors.

Eat Vegan

http://www.rodale.com/kind-diet?cm_mmc=DailyNewsNL-_-2010_10_21-_-Top5-_-NA

It is bad enough that I had to give up beef.

I am not ready to give up fish and fowl.

But the very gushy article at the link above does make vegan sound good.

Chili Peppers

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/21/science/21peppers.html?th&emc=th

I love chili peppers.

Interesting that the spiciness developed as a defense against fungus.

Claddagh

We had the calamari and the mussels, both excellent.

Hot Lemonade

http://www.foodandwine.com/recipes/hot-lemonade-with-rum

Spiking the lemonade with a high quality dark rum might make it even better than the hot lemonade at the Red Pepper Deli.

Red Pepper Deli

http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/19/1485587/restaurant/Detroit/Red-Pepper-Deli-Northville

We had samples from the Red Pepper Deli at the Plymouth Fall Festival last friday.

They were excellent.

We had more excellent snacks at their Northville location tonight.

The hot lemonade was the best lemonade I ever tasted.

Hot in both temperature and spiciness.

Chicken Tenders

http://simplyrecipes.com/recipes/herbed_chicken_tenders_with_tomato_sauce/

Worth trying.

Stop Frankenfish

http://www.foodandwaterwatch.org/fish/seafood/stop-frankenfish/

Someone should make a movie about this.

Maybe Tim Burton?

But he is busy with the Frankenweenie remake.

AquaAdvantage

http://www.rodale.com/genetically-engineered-salmon?cm_mmc=DailyNewsNL-_-2010_09_16-_-Top5-_-NA

Making salmon grow faster.

Freedom to Choose Better Beer

http://libertystreetbeer.com/

Excellent beer.

Growlers

http://www.bellportbeer.com/All_About_Growlers.html

We got a growler from Liberty Street Brewery in Plymouth.

Pub Brown Ale was excellent.

I promptly rinsed it, so according to the above link, it should be ready for a refill.

Angels on Horseback

http://simplyrecipes.com/recipes/angels_on_horseback/

Oysters wrapped in bacon, then squirted with lemon juice.

I could eat a couple of dozen at one sitting.

Vermouth

http://www.chicagotribune.com/features/food/newsletter/sns-newsletter-about-vermouth,0,3859157.story

I have never had a shot of vermouth.

After reading this article, I am willing to try one.

Coconut Curry Mussels

http://simplyrecipes.com/recipes/coconut_curry_mussels/

And how can you go wrong with food best served with beer and crusty bread?

Thanks to Elizabeth for sending me this link.

Yes, there are a lot of wild edibles out there.

KC BBQ

http://simplyrecipes.com/recipes/kansas_city_barbecue_sauce/

I like thick sweet spicy barbecue sauces.

Cowboy beans

http://simplyrecipes.com/recipes/cowboy_beans/

Sounds interesting.

I never thought of adding coffee to my beans.

Mia Famiglia

Thursday night we went to Mia Famiglia in Hales Corners.

http://www.miafamigliarestaurant.com/

Started with a very good Pinot Grigio.

The eggplant appetizer was good but not as good as Ricardo's.

The Italian salad was very good, the peperoncini were spicy and the vinaigrette was flavorful.

The grilled halibut was one of the best pieces of fish I ever tasted. Served with a saffron-infused potato puree and grilled zucchini.

The 32-layer chocolate buttercream torte was outstanding.

The weather was beautiful and we ate outside on the patio.

Excellent food and excellent service.

One of the best meals I ever had.

Mustard BBQ

http://simplyrecipes.com/recipes/south_carolina_mustard_bbq_sauce/

This might be interesting because it is so very different from most of the BBQ sauces I have seen.

Vodka

http://www.sciencenews.org/view/generic/id/59827/title/Vodkas_bonds_may_influence_taste

Confusing, like many topics in agricultural and food chemistry.

Local artisanal food movements

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/02/dining/02vendors.html?pagewanted=1&th&emc=th

If there is a similar local artisanal food movement in Milwaukee, I have yet to find it.

The Winter Farmers Market did not even come close to what is described in this article.

There should be some additional options to avoid doing business with the "evil agribusiness warlords."

Syrah

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/02/dining/02pour.html?pagewanted=1&th&emc=th

Interesting to note that pinot noir's boost from the movie "Sideways" is blamed for part of syrah's problems.

Tanzanian Peaberry

I finished the Signature Ethiopian, and started on the Tanzanian Peaberry.

Another fine coffee from Berres Brothers.

Tuesday, May 18, 2010

Edible Wild Herbs

http://www.herbcompanion.com/gardening/edible-wild-herbs-guide.aspx

I might have to start eating more wild herbs.

We have plenty of violets in the garden.

Berres Brothers Signature Ethiopian

I am almost to the bottom of the bag of the Berres Brothers Signature Ethiopian.

A truly excellent coffee.

Pesticides in food

http://www.rodale.com/pesticides-food?cm_mmc=DailyNewsNL-_-2010_05_18-_-Top5-_-NA

I might have to start buying more organic foods.

Random Thoughts About Food

Because we need more songs about food.

And more random thoughts about food.
